Kaveh Sadeghian, President of the Student Assembly
Heyo! I guess I’ll start off by getting the basics down: 6’1.75″, Class of 2012, Marketing & Public Health Double Major, eat the spicy peppers at former Quiznos obsessively, and act on whims (as illustrated by my current baldness).
If I said, “I love to work”, there would be a hefty footnote next to that statement. This next sentence is that hefty footnote: I love to work only because I honestly believe there is no reason why work, in any capacity, cannot be as enjoyable as it is effective and rewarding. I spent this past last year serving the Student Assembly as the Vice-President. While there was work, it was, to say the least, one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had at W&M. I saw a side of campus I didn’t know existed. Whether it was reading and learning about over 120 student organizations’ missions and activities during the budget process or working on claims and concerns that were sent through the SA website, I loved and thrived off the communicative aspect of Student Assembly– where the student body finally blended in with the Student Assembly. This is something that I not only would expect to uphold next year, but attempt to institutionalize, making it concrete and embedded in how the Student Assembly operates
Students are, in essence, the composition of this school. Through our pens, our actions, and our aspirations, William & Mary is given a life that continues to breathe both in the past, present, and well into the future. This is where I’m most interested to spend my time. While I was able to experience everything the student body had to offer in SA, I’ve also dived into some other opportunities its presented me. I’m a member of SOMOS, a public health research team that goes to the Dominican Republic every year, a member of SASA (die-hard Expressions fan), sit on the Diversity Committee of the College, and help organize Dance Marathon.
I really enjoy everything that this school has to offer and have realized that the Student Assembly can’t be the only thing that you do, but rather supplement everything you do. It’s an organization that has the ability to empower and nurture the eclectic and multifaceted nature of this school. There are so many personalities, people, interests, ideals out there and the Student Assembly is privileged to have the ability to allow each of those to proudly define this school for the next 318 years.
Molly Bulman, Vice President of the Student Assembly
I’m really a simple person. I’m inspired by the wonderful people in my life, and I work as hard as I can when I see an opportunity to better the world around me. It’s my third year at W&M studying Public Policy and a little bit of Finance. I was born and raised in Jersey and am a sports fanatic, carefully balancing all my social responsibilities with a baseball game here and a trip into Old City Philadelphia there. Since 2008, I’ve tried to surround myself with the political world, always reading and trying to gain as many perspectives as possible. I’ve spent a decent amount of time working on campaigns from state senate to Presidential politics. Through these experience I’ve come to realize a personal mantra to avoid reinventing the wheel.
It can be painful at times to watch various organizations with the same goals and vision in mind step on the toes of one another to try to establish the “best” practice. I’ve found that the best practice can only come from active collaboration and an understanding of the need to share ideas and communicate with all parties involved. For example, over the last two years I worked with the Campus Kitchen at the College (CKWM) and watched as leaders before me collaborated with the Housing Authority, other food recovery organizations, and many more community partners. As I started to get involved with Student Assembly (first as the Undersecretary for Voter Registration Initiatives and later as the Secretary of Student Life), I found the same technique could apply. I opened the communication lines between Greeks and “Greens” (eco-conscious students) and between different service organizations trying to accomplish the same goals. I found SA to be a great resource as so many brilliant minds (which are already involved in so many other projects and programs) could meet together to address some of the biggest issues and concerns facing the campus.
If I’m not working with SA or CKWM, you’ll usually find me over at the Rec Center. I teach fitness classes, and have recently broken into the running craze (shoutout to all my Colonial Half runners). It’s the only way I can focus all my energy I have stored up from the week after bouncing ideas off of Kaveh, my Freshman Sharpe class students, and all the other wonderful people in my life.
